NYC shock jock Don Imus has joined Howard Stern in calling for the
removal of George W. Bush. In Stern's case, it is obviously related to
the FCC crackdown. Clearview Inc., whose executives are closely tied to
Bush, has cancelled its contract with Stern on more than 10 percent of
his stations. Stern is also a social libertarian who has mocked
Christian fundamentalism over the years. On www.howardstern.com, there's
a section titled "Bush Facts" that has links like these:

Imus comes at things from a somewhat different angle. Although his
audience is much smaller, he is considered more influential with elites.
Time Magazine in fact named him one of the US's 50 most influential
people a couple of years ago. While Stern interviews Hollywood starlets
and porn stars, Imus provides a platform for people like John Kerry who
gave an interview last week that made the front page of the NY Times.

Like Stern, he was gung-ho for invading Afghanistan and Iraq. Around 4
months ago, he began to sour on the war in Iraq. This new-found
dovishness has much in common with the Vietnam era, when battlefield
reversals led many high-profile politicians and journalists to wring
their hands over the "tragic mistake".

For the past couple of weeks, Imus has been using a joke with all the
Senators and big-name journalists who are his guests. He says that the
USA should go to Saddam Hussein and tell him something like this. "Look,
we're sorry about what happened to your sons, knocking down your statue
and all the rest. But we've decided to give you back the country. It's
just too much of a hassle to hold on to it. We'll clean up your palaces,
pay for damages and then it's all yours."

Apparently, this is not that much of a joke:

U.S. Moves to Rehire Some From Baath Party, Military

The United States is moving to rehire former members of Iraq's ruling
Baath Party and senior Iraqi military officers fired after the ouster of
Saddam Hussein, in an effort to undo the damage of its two most
controversial policies in Iraq, according to U.S. officials.

The U.S. administrator of Iraq, L. Paul Bremer, proposed the policy
shifts to broaden the strategy to entice the powerful Sunni minority
back into the political fold and weaken support for the insurgency in
the volatile Sunni Triangle, two of the most persistent challenges for
the U.S.-led occupation, the officials say. Both policies are at the
heart of national reconciliation, increasingly important as the
occupation nears an end.
