Einstein was being charitable, even in your bowdlerization, which makes a 
great pun on "discourse": the same might occur if you talk close enough to the 
mirror, or to paraphrase Nietzche on the intellectual impulse to narcissism, 
[from Jenseits von Gut und Bose (beyond good and evil)], beware when looking into 
the abyss, for the abyss might enter one's soul. That's a little ponderous 
and scary, so I like Einstein's euphemism better. But check out Christopher 
Lasch's "The Culture of Narcissism" for serious insight and reflection on what 
shapes people's behavior and thinking.
