Not in registering to vote prior to casting a vote, but in many states,
party preference is registered as condition for voting participation in
primaries, caucus, conventions etc. See e.g. box 7 in the form at
http://www.fec.gov/votregis/pdf/nvra.pdf .

Registration procedures can differ somewhat between different states in the
Union. Point is that if stating your party preference is required, it does
not necessarily mean party membership.

In New Mexico, anybody applying to register as a voter may choose to check
the "No Party" or "Decline to State" box on the application.  However, New
Mexico has a closed primary.  This means that only those registered in a
major party (Democrats, Republicans, Greens) may participate in the primary
election, while members of minor political parties and independent voters
cannot vote in a primary election.
