Outlook: Shiite Iraq
University of Michigan Professor
Monday, August 16, 2004
The fighting in Najaf is more than a battle between an insurgent militia and
an occupying army--it is also a battle for the heart and soul of Shiite
Iraq. In taking on the American military, Moqtada Sadr and his Mahdi army
have challenged the authority of Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, a champion of
parliamentary democracy and the current leader of the Iraqi Shiite
community. Beyond these two men, there are other Shiite leaders--including
three grand ayatollahs educated in Najaf--whose views will help determine
what happens in the coming months.
Juan Cole, a professor of Modern Middle Eastern and South Asian History at
the University of Michigan, answered questions on his Sunday Outlook piece,
"The Men and Mindsets of Shiite Iraq" Monday, Aug. 16, at 1 p.m. ET.
