"Freedom only for the supporters of the government, only for the members of
a party - however large its numbers - is not freedom. Freedom is always
freedom for dissidents. Not on the ground of a fanaticism about
'righteousness', but because all that is enlightening, wholesome and
purifying about political freedom depends on this foundation, and its effect
is weakened, if 'freedom' becomes a privilege."

- Rosa Luxemburg, Die Russische Revolution (1918)

(Note: this manuscript, unpublished by Rosa herself, was first published in
edited form by Paul Levi in 1922; Felix Weil published the original version
in 1928. Cf. Felix Weil, "Rosa Luxemburg ubder die Russische Revolution",

(Grunberg-Archiv), 13, 1928).
