Some qualification is necessary. The growing of grain on the Great
Plains is also irrational; livestock grazing (without use of feed
grains) is probably the _only_ rational use of water resources there.
That means fewer animals and less tender meat. There are many areas of
the world in which extensive crop-raising is irrational, but which will
support goats, chickens, rabbits etc. along with some cultivation of the
land.

Desertification in some areas of the world is primarily the result of
grain production.

In the long run a totally vegetarian diet is not ecologically
sustainable.
