Ex-Mexico oil director to be extradited
Former Pemex chief denies embezzling

HOUSTON – A federal judge Friday ordered the former director of Mexico's
national oil company sent home to face charges of embezzlement and wrongful
use of power during the country's 2000 elections.

Rogelio Montemayor Seguy, who had been living in Houston, had fought
Mexico's extradition request, arguing that he is innocent of wrongdoing and
that the charges are politically motivated.

Mr. Montemayor was accused originally of illegally using his position at
Pemex to funnel $209 million in labor union funds to his party, the
Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), during the 2000 election, but his
lawyer said the extradition is on a more limited charge.

"It's a technical charge. It has nothing to do with theft. It has nothing to
do with funneling money to the PRI," attorney Mike DeGeurin said.

Mr. Montemayor has until Aug. 11 to appeal the order.
