I agree with Melvyn that abolitionism is a very good example. Without
shortchanging the decades of antislavery agitation, the systematic
weaknesses of the antebellum Union placed antislavery action on the
agenda. The slaveocracy overplayed its hand, was too insistent on an
invasive, centralized government in its own interest. It was the
aggression of the slave power after 1848 that persuaded a majority of
Americans, who thought that slavery did not or no longer effected their
communities but were forced to realize that it did.
The Bush administration has been a nice contemporary microcosm of this
process. Indeed, I have Democratic friends who insist that the secret
strategy of the Congressional Democrats since Nixon's day has been to
give Republicans enough rope to hang themselves. I disagree with this
overgenerous bit of wishful thinking, but there's certainly truth in it.
Bush creates more critics in five minutes than a platoon of people
saying that the White House lies over decades.
