Greens say claims in new book that NZ has been involved in spying on the
United Nations needs govt explanation

20 June 2004

The [New Zealand] government is being called on to explain New Zealand's
involvement in spying on the United Nations. A new book claims New Zealand
was part of an electronic intelligence gathering operation, along with
Australia, the US, Britain and Canada. The Green Party's foreign affairs
spokesman Keith Locke says the government should explain why New Zealand is
involved in spying for the United States. He says it must say why New
Zealand is still in the Echelon network, when it is being used against the
country's foreign policy over the war in Iraq. The book claims the
advantages of being in the Echelon spy network are outweighed by its
drawbacks. Mr Locke says there is no indication New Zealand has received
anything significant from the network. He says New Zealand's intelligence
service should be made more accountable. He says New Zealand should not have
a station at Waihopai as part of a US-controlled intelligence-gathering
operation, if the information is used to prosecute a war the New Zealand
government opposes. Mr Locke says the government needs to offer an
explanation. http://home.nzcity.co.nz/news/default.asp?id=40533&c=w
