I think you're unfamiliar with U.S. conditions. This union merger makes
sense in a lot of ways.

The most important one is that these are both unions that welcome,
actively recruit and defend undocumented workers. Despite Unite's
origins, right now it organizes many workers in industrial laundries
that service the "hospitality" sector. It is not unusual to find the
Latino immigrants who work in both these sectors to hold two jobs -- one
at a UNITE-type place, one at a HERE-type place.
