MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- All charges against Army Muslim chaplain James Yee
-- who was initially accused of espionage at the terrorist detention camp at
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba -- have been dropped, the U.S. Army said Friday.

Yee had faced charges related to the alleged mishandling of classified
information at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

But after extensive review, U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Miller, the
commander of Joint Task Force Guantanamo, decided to stop pursuing the
matter.

"Citing national security concerns that would arise from the release of the
evidence, Miller decided to drop these charges," the Army said in a
statement. "Miller made his decision after consultation with government
lawyers and intelligence officials."

Yee had proposed to resign from the Army if the military would end its
effort to prosecute him. Under that proposal, Yee said he would agree to
take a polygraph and undergo a national security debriefing for up to 30
days. He also sought immunity from future charges.

_______________

This is a striking illustration of the complete ignorance and incompetence
of the neo-con wing of the ruling class. Even with the stacked deck of a
military tribunal, they were unable to bring any charges against Captain
Yee. What does this say about the remaining Guantanamo prisoners, who as men
in limbo aren't even guaranteed the limited protection afforded by the U.S.
Uniform Code of Military Justice?

All supporters of basic justice should demand that the Guantanamo prisoners
be freed and allowed to return to their homes or, considering the dangers
that they may face in home countries, to another country of their choice.

According to U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Miller, the commander of Joint
Task Force Guantanamo, national security concerns led the army to drop
charges.

This is a transparent lie.

For in exchange for full immunity, Captain Yee had earlier AGREED TO RESIGN
FROM THE SERVICE, take a polygraph and undergo a national security
debriefing for up to 30 days.

This was rejected. Yet, now all major charges are dropped, Captain Yee
RETURNS TO SERVICE, and receives only a slap on the wrist (Article 15
proedure) for viewing pornography and adultery (not proved and whose
business is it anyway besides Captain Yee and his wife?)

Clearly the government is on the run. The freed British Guantanamo prisoners
are speaking out. Other recently released prisoners have said that as soon
as they are back home and feel secure, they will too. We must defend the
prisoners and salute their families and their attorneys and urge them to
follow the rules of war--to turn a defeat into a rout, attack, attack,
attack.
