1- Union Delegation to Venezuela: Please Send Your Solidarity Messages!
March 29, 2004
Dear Friends and Supporters of the OWC:
In one week, the Continuations Committee of the Sao Paulo Workers
Conference Against the FTAA (held last December 12-14) will be sending
a trade union delegation to Venezuela at the invitation of the
coordinators of the Movimiento Continental Bolivariano. [For more
background info on this anti-FTAA conference, please visit our website
at http://www.owcinfo.org .]
The purpose of the delegation is to learn first-hand about the
situation facing the Venezuelan workers and to bring the solidarity of
the trade union movement represented at the Sao Paulo conference to the
workers and people of Venezuela, who are facing an imminent threat of
direct intervention by the U.S. government.
The five-person delegation includes three prominent union and political
leaders from Brazil: Julio Turra, National Executive Director of the
CUT trade union federation; Plinio de Arruda Sampaio, veteran human
rights leader and historic figure in the Brazilian Workers Party (PT);
and Luis Eduardo Greenhalg, PT Senator from the state of Sao Paulo.
Also part of the delegation are two leaders of the General Union of
Guadeloupan Workers (UGTG): Charly Lendo and Garbiel Bourguignon.
We call on unionists and activists from the United States to send
solidarity statements -- either personal or from your
union/organization -- which this delegation can deliver to the workers
of Venezuela. The delegation will be visiting factories, workplaces,
and union halls -- and also addressing labor rallies. They would like
to bring the solidarity message of the U.S. workers to the embattled
Please send your solidarity statements to Julio Turra at
