Carroll's figure of 50,000-40,000 bp reflects an assumed qualitative
improvement in communications from innovative stone technology. Almost
surely language improved around that time, but the consensus seems to be
that language goes back much farther...and was a factor in explaining
the success of homo sapiens sapiens over our Neanderthal cousins.
