The book I mentioned in the post, Ian Tattersall, _Becoming Human_. Part
of the argument is speculative, but he also has some substantive
reasons. One of the jacket blurbs is by Niles Eldredge (Gould's
colleague in the development of "punctuated equilibrium" in evolutionary
theory). Tattersal is Curator in the Dept. of Anthropology at the
American Museum of Natural History.
