Thanks for the Robert Todd Lincoln story ascribing it to an Iowa
spiritualist.  I'd never heard that.  I'm sure he referred to its use by
Moses Hull in _Your Answer or Your Life, or, the Riddle Propounded by
the American Sphinx (Des Moines, 1888).  

Hull was a prominent agitator and also an avowed spiritualist--as famed
for one as the other.  Towards the end of his life, he and Dr. Juliet H.
Severence of Milwaukee established a spiritualist healing clinic at
Whitewater, Wisconsin.  In one of his last acts, Hull ran for Congress
in 1904 on the Socialist Party ticket.
