"Kerala lived up to its reputation as one of India's few 
Communist strongholds – the left won almost all the seats 
there."   Kerala:  CPM 12 & CPI 3 of 20 seats.

"The Communist parties have done exceedingly well in their 
stronghold, West Bengal, and are expected to be a key ally 
of the new Congress party-led federal government."  (CPM has 
14 seats of 25 called so far, RSP 3 & CPI 2.)

Samajwadi Party, regional left party to which Phoolan Devi 
belonged, leads in U.P., Rashtriya Janata Dal, socialist 
party and key player in the Congress coalition leads in
