Well, it would have been nice if Tom actually read through my post 
instead of just seizing the first line...because it's hard to see how
my saying, "The question is one of serious engagement with the concrete 
realities and difficulties socialism faced. You don't have to be a 
Stalinist to understand and evaluate the context in which socialist 
revolutions were attempted and carried out," translates into, "Support
the Stasi secret police and East German Communism!"

This is a false dichotomy, where you either backed Communist full-on
or accept the bourgeois explanations for its failure. For me the issue 
is that in the latter case, you develop a cynicism and hostility
against all "heirarchical" organizations and what not, which is a 
hallmark of the autonomist/anarchist current that is much in fashion
in left circles these days. Michael Albert is one example of this
trend.
