German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger Becomes Pope Benedict XVI

Rome, Apr 19 (Prensa Latina) The Roman Catholic Church on
Tuesday elected German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger the 265th
Pope Benedict XVI at the first Conclave of the 21st
Millennium, by 77 votes out of 115.

Ratzinger, who was born in Passau, Bavaria 78 years ago, is
the first German Pope in 1,000 years. He was the Dean of
the College of Cardinals and has been Head of the
Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith since 1981.

Benedict XVI is a great communicator, multilingual, and a
reserved man who earned fame for his conservatism in
matters of dogma. He is considered the author of several
encyclical letters of the late John Paul II.

He opposes female priests, condemns homosexuals, and was
instrumental in the banning of communion for remarrying
divorcees, a conservatism he extends to Liberation
Theology.

Many have already said that his election will block every
progressive movement inside the Church.

In his memoirs, he confessed to sympathy with the Nazis
during World War II, which he explained as compulsory
enrollment in the Nazi youth movement in 1941 at age 14.

In addition to his advanced age and delicate health,
Benedict will have to contend with mending relations with
Islam, the divisions between the wealthy north and the poor
south, the priest sex-abuse scandals worldwide, coping with
a chronic shortage of priests and nuns in the West, and
halting the stream of deserters.
