Reyza Zain and Anne Jaclard will discuss the
Indonesian and U.S. governments’ mis-use of tsunami
relief aid for political purposes, the
political-economic roots of the disaster, and the
future of the Achenese people’s struggle for
self-determination. Questions they will explore
include: Are the Achenese people part of the
Indonesian nation? What is the relationship between
mass movement for self-determination and human rights?
How is ecological degradation bound up with military
repression? Was the massive death toll a result of
only a “natural” disaster, or was it a preventable
by-product of capitalism? What can be done to change
the U.S. left’s limited interest in Acheh?

Reyza Zain was an activist in the peaceful student
movement for self-determination that flowered after
the end of the dictatorship in Indonesia, but was then
severely repressed. He was forced to flee Acheh for
his life. Anne Jaclard is a local feminist and
Marxist-Humanist who has been active for seven years
in solidarity work with grassroots civil society
movements in Acheh.
