The massive May Day demonstration (over one million oaccording to
some) in Venezuela was hugely significant according to Roberto
Jorquera, who is the Green Left Weekly correspondent based there - and
who offered the opinion that Chavez's speech had the significance of
Fidel Castro's famous declaration to a mass demonstration about the
socialist character the Cuban Revolution.

Venezuela Soidarity page has a number of very inspiring reports that
give a sense of it, including a great report from Roberto. The march
was organised around an explicetly socialist banner and the struggle
to create socialism has been taken up by the revolutionary workers
with enthusiasm! All indications are that the socialist stage of the
Venezuelan revolution is opening up, althogyh there is clearly a lof
of ongoing discussion and debate about socialism, what it is, what it
means in venezuela etc. Extremely exciting times...
