Deadly Benzene Plant Explosion Reported in China

Beijing, Nov 14 (Prensa Latina) At least five people died while 70 
were wounded and six are missing at a chemical plant explosion in Jilin 
province, northeastern China, authorities report Monday.

The blasts took place at about 13:45 local time Sunday at a 
workshop in the No. 101 Chemical Plant under the CNPC Jilin 
Petrochemical Company based in Jilin City, some 100 km east of 
Changchun, the provincial capital.

Injured people were admitted to two local hospitals and some 
had to be operated on.

More than 10,000 residents, among them students of two colleges 
of the area, were evacuated to avoid chemical pollution and another 

The company's presidency declared this morning the fire was 
caused by mismanagement of a problem in a plant that processed benzene, 
a highly flammable liquid, but there was no toxic gas detected in the 
air surrounding the affected district.

Authorities have requested that hotels, restaurants and taxis 
to assist evacuees.

Meanwhile, work on compensation for the victims has begun 
Monday, according to the Jilin Petrochemical Company.
