CHARLIE DON'T SURF: A CINEMATIC TRIBUTE TO JOE STRUMMER
CURZON SOHO THU 8 - SUN 11 DECEMBER

CHARLIE DON'T SURF celebrates the acting and composing output of the legendary musician Joe Strummer in the period after The Clash and in the beginning of The Mescaleros. Strummer worked with some of the most innovative and respected independent filmmakers of recent times such as Alex Cox, Robert Frank, Aki Kaurismaki, Rudy Wurlitzer and Jim Jarmusch and was much sought after by John Cusack to provide music for GROSSE POINTE BLANK. The centrepiece of the season, LET'S ROCK AGAIN, was made by Strummer's cinematic collaborator and friend Dick Rude and captures Joe & The Mescaleros on the road on the last US tour before Joe's death. A very special screening to open proceedings, the UK Premiere of the film is sure to be an emotional experience for fans and friends alike. CHARLIE DON'T SURF is presented by Filmstock Film Festival in association with Strummerville, Curzon Soho and Some Friendly PR.

Jim Jarmusch, Elvis Costello, The Pogues. UK 1987. 86mins.
Joe's biggest role as an actor, as one third of a gang of robbers holed up in a small desert town in Alex Cox's deranged all-star punk Western. After a hostile arrival a lot of coffee is drunk and things settle down until Amos Dade arrives.

WALKER [18]

Tired of contributing to scores, Joe wanted to do his own score and he got his chance on Alex Cox's anachronistic and allegorical film, starring Ed Harris as William Walker who sets out with the intention to liberate Nicaragua but loses his way. Joe's soundtrack has recently been reissued.

Joe said he liked with working on movies with Ossang because they were Anti Hollywood and this hallucinatory road movie about a man on the edge is truly anti Hollywood. Angstel, young and a hot head, takes off through South America with an exotic dancer and a car full of guns after being stood up by his girlfriend for the last time.

MYSTERY TRAIN [15]
Director: Jim Jarmush. Starring: Youki Kudoh, Masatoshi Nagase, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Cinque Lee, Sy Richardson, Joe Strummer. US 1989. 110mins.
Alongside STRAIGHT TO HELL this is Joe's most famous and largest role as an actor and it is truly memorable. Jim Jarmusch's film is set out as 3 vignettes and Joe stars in the final one as Johnny, a clear Elvis fan, trying to convince his pals to stage a robbery.

JOE STRUMMER DOUBLE BILL
PERMANENT RECORD [15]
Director: Marisa Silver. Starring: Alan Boyce, Keanu Reeves, Michelle Meyrink, Jennifer Rubin. US 1988. 91mins. Score by Joe Strummer.
This early Keanu Reeves film features not only a great performance from the young actor but some of Joe's most bittersweet, heartfelt and rocking soundtrack work. Currently unavailable and cruelly so it perfectly captures the mood of this dark teen movie about a young man's suicide and the effect it has on those he leaves behind.
&
GROSSE POINTE BLANK [15]
Director: George Armitage. Starring: John Cusack, Minnie Driver, Alan Arkin, Dan Aykroyd, Joe Strummer. US 1997. 107mins. Score by Joe Strummer.
John Cusack personally tracked Joe down and talked him into providing music for this cult favourite about a hitman going back to his school for a reunion and confronting his high-school sweetheart who he jilted at the prom. The music was all personally picked by Cusack and is a sweet mix of Joe, The Clash, The Violent Femmes, The Specials and The Jam.
