Even if China were capitalist, as some on the left argue, and others hope,
China's development as an international super-power remains a progressive
reality in any event. When a formerly colonial country which has been 
under the thumb of imperialism both throws off the foreign occupations
and takes charge of its own destiny, Marxists should be delighted not
bent out of shape.

Those who are operating with complete, settled conclusion, which might
be crudely summarized as "China: bad, Bad, BAD" have avoided matters of
Marxist understanding such as how a peaceful transition seems to have
taken place from what existed before (choose your term: socialist state
or bureaucratically deformed workers state, or whatever) which in the
past they would have at least defended against imperialism, and what's
in existence there now. Trotsky had a far more nuanced approach:
