Jim,

I think a number of ex-SWPers would credit the CPUS with taking a
correct position on the Henry A. Wallace campaign, and add that the SWP
decision to go into national politics in 1948 was simply incorrect, and
undertaken mostly to offer an alternative to Wallace.  Louis, I think,
was making this argument just a while ago on this list....

Frankly, it was comparable to Daniel DeLeon's decision that the
Socialist Labor Party had to enter national politics in 1892, mostly to
undercut the Populists.  

What's needed is a kind of electoral union of the Left to support the
largest possible principled progressive campaign behind mounted outside
the capitalist parties.  In that, the Wallace campaign is a reasonable
model.
