Brewer has lots in common with Brenner and Meiksins Wood. The book is
basically a polemic against dependency theory and has kind words to say
about the awful Bill Warren in the concluding chapter. You can understand
books being written like this in 1980, when a reaction against the excesses
of the "anti-imperialist" left were being felt across the academic left.
Nowadays they seem quaint in the light of what is transpiring in Africa and
much of Asia and Latin America.
