The Spaniards, and Europeans in general, were entirely
familiar with slavery. It had never ceased to exist,
and seems to have become more common from the 13th
century onwards. The trade in Africans, in particular,
massively expanded in southern Europe over the course
of the 15th century.

The use of slavery in the colonies was simply a
continuation of its use in Europe.
