The general consensus among most Marxist historians today is that the
Southern planters were most definitely capitalists in every sense of the
term. The idea that they were not didn't come from the Marxists really
but from Charles Beard and that current of "Progressive historians" who
took rhetoric counterposing the urban industrial North to the rural
agrarian South very literally.

We have to remember that these guys were individually interchangeable
with the town bourgeoisie or legal professionals or railroad
entrepreneurs. They usually combined functions, as well as owning the
plantation.
