Evo Responds to Bolivian Strikes

La Paz, Apr 11 (Prensa Latina) The partial transportation strike in
the central Bolivian city of Cochabamba, and the national one by the
health sector, along with other protests, took place in calm Tuesday,
each producing a government response.

The Cochabama bus strike is against a government decree obliging that
transport companies pay highway taxes, but the government, pointing
out this tax does not affect small urban transport, was adamant that
the entrepreneurs will not evade paying taxes.

Meanwhile, the demand -through a 24-hour strike convoked by the
Cochabama Civic Committee- that the government bail-out the
privatized Lloyed Bolivian Airlines (LAB) was likewise rejected by
the administration.

The government position is that the near-bankruptcy is due to the
decade-long neoliberal privatization policy, and bail-out is not the

A 48-hour strike by health workers, only partially effective, began
today for higher wages. President Evo Morales condemned this protest,
highlighting that the administration has already increased health
workers´ and teachers´ salaries 7 percent, the highest in many years.


Bolivian Military Aids Literacy Drive

La Paz, Apr 11 (Prensa Latina) The Bolivian Armed Forces announced
its active participation Tuesday, in the National Literacy Program
"Yo Si Puedo" (Yes, I Can), which the Bolivian government is carrying
out with Cuba´s assistance.

The military will transport TV sets and video players, books and
other materials needed for the literacy campaign, which will teach
more than one million Bolivians to write and read in 30 months.

The army´s support was established in an Inter-institutional Literacy
Agreement signed by the Ministers of Education Felix Patzi, and
Defense Walter San Miguel, and Armed Forces Chief Gen. Wilfredo

The Ministry of Defense will provide logistic support consisting of
fuel, aircraft maintenance, motorized vehicles and land units, as
well as other expenses required for supervision and facilitation of
the program.

The Armed Forces will also provide the infrastructure necessary to
care for and store the materials and equipment used in the campaign.
