500 people came out to an anti-war rally in Salt Lake City on Saturday
April 29. The Wasatch Coalition for Peace and Justice, Veterans for Peace
and the Salt Lake Friends Meeting (Quakers) initiated an April 29
Committee based on a three-point stand:

1) Support the Troops, Bring Them All Home Alive Now! U.S. Out of Iraq.

2) Money for education, healthcare, housing and environmental protection -
	Human Needs Not War.

3) Defend civil liberties and immigrant rights. End illegal spying,
government corruption and the subversion of democracy(point 3 taken
verbatim from the national call for April 29).

Fifteen other organizations including Utah Jobs with Justice and the Utah
National Organization for Women became co-sponsors (VfP and NOW are also
part of the Wasatch Coalition <www.wasatchpeaceandjustice.org>.

The well-received program included music, poetry and four
speakers: Debbie Johnson of Military Families Speak Out, immigrant rights
activist Isaac Giron who is a member of Youth for Socialist Action and the
Brown Berets, Steelworkers Union district representative Julie Holzer and
Salt Lake Mayor Rocky Anderson. Anderson, an unusually radical Democrat,
gave a rousing speech strongly and explicity supporting the April 29
Committee program and, as has been a signature of his administration,
supporting the immigrant rights movement.

This small anti-war rally took place about three weeks after the
largest political demonstration in Utah history by far, a mainly Latina/o
march of 40,000 from the city government building to the state capitol and
back. Today's anti-war rally strongly solidarized with the immigrant
rights struggle and Giron called on everyone to participate in May 1st
actions on Monday.
