Lou Paulsen:
>Most of us are writing from a very fortunate and privileged position -
>that of being socialists in the imperialist world. In the first place,
>this has made it a lot easier for us to survive. In the second place, it
>makes it a lot easier for us to figure out what positions we are supposed
>to take, what we are supposed to say, and who to say it to.

Any ideas I have about the Iranian left come strictly from the Iranian left
itself. I recommend Maziar Behrooz's "Rebels With a Cause: The Failure of
the Left in Iran". Here's an excerpt:
http://bss.sfsu.edu/behrooz/m-keddie.pdf. I also recommend Val Moghadam's
1987 NLR article titled "Socialism or Anti-imperialism: The Left and
Revolution in Iran": http://www.marxmail.org/NLR16201.pdf

There's a wide consensus on the Iranian left today that it was a tragic
mistake to adapt to the Khomeinists. That is why Yoshie's fawning over
Ahmadinejad in MRZine generated an open letter of protest by Iranian
leftists, including everyone who has ever written for Monthly Review
