I disagree. The Iranian workers and their allies had an ability "to
tip the revolution forward into socialism" -- after all, they toppled
the Shah who was supported by the multinational empire, so there was
no reason they couldn't shove Khomeini, who was not supported by the
empire, aside if they wanted -- they didn't have the desire to do so.
A majority of the working class, as well as other non-ruling classes,
in the United States of America today do NOT want socialism, and that
is why they do NOT support American leftists and choose Democrats or
Republicans instead, and we can't blame them for that. Similarly, a
majority of the working class, as well as other non-ruling classes, in
Iran did NOT want socialism at the time of the Iranian Revolution, and
that is why they did NOT support the Iranian left and chose Islamists
and voted for and supported an Islamic Republic instead, and we can't
blame them for that. Whether we are in the United States or anywhere
else, leftists need to reckon with the hard truth when people don't
support us, rather than blaming only our political opponents and
denying that we do not enjoy their support. Denial makes us unable
and unwilling to change ourselves so as to become able to win their
support.
