[Marxism] Chavez vis-a-vis Olmert-Lebanon and Putin-Chechnya

In line with the "questions that non-socialists ask socialists trying to
convince them", I have one more question (which I actually got asked):

"Given that Chavez has recalled his ambassador from Israel and broken off
relations with Israel, but just spent time in Russia being friendly with
Putin, isn't his action hypocritical? Given that Putin bombed civilians and
leveled Grozny, just as Olmert bombed civilians and is leveling South
Lebanon as we speak?"

Any suggestions as to how we, as socialists, should address this question?
My first reaction was to say that Chechnya is territorially a part of
Russia, whereas Israel is an occupier. However, this does not seem to be a
very strong argument, because Chechnya is quite distinct and probably would
count as a "nation" under Lenin's definition...
