Perhaps an even more enigmatic question is why the Russian working
class let the gains of socialism be plundered by capitalists after
1990 without "making the revolution" to defend it.
In an interview with Darcus Howe in the eighties (in Paul Buhle's book
about CLR James), the interviewer asks Howe, "What do you anticipate
history will judge his (James's) major contribution?"
Howe replies, "I think the overthrow of the Russian state by the
Russian working class will be the final seal on the contribution
[James] has made. This event would prove without dispute the
