The ban on the employment of spouses is widespread and common. Like every
other rule in academe, it is a substitute for doing something serious about
a real problem. These ranges from hiring standards for administrators down
through the application of affirmative action norms to sanctions for student
misconduct. Consistency and honesty are rare in the enforcement of these
things.

On this matter, I have never worked any place that the employment of
relatives wasn't done very regularly. While people get very huffy when
that's pointed out in connection with the insiders to the profession, it's
selectively employed to exclude outsiders. Academe in general is often as
much a hereditary family affair as law or medicine.

Schools give each other great autonomy in such things. Catholic schools
even more so.
