Abandoning all pretenses of defending university autonomy, the Kirchner
administration send 800 uniformed cops and 100 in civilian cops to
smash a demonstration of about 1.000 students protesting the
realization of the University Assembly -- the government body
of the university of Buenos Aires -- meeting outside the campuses
(actually in Congress) to elect a Kirchnerist new Dean.

The Assembly is control by the so-called "Oligarchy of the 600
tenure professors" which controls the 236-member Assembly
where most teachers and all workers have no representation and
the students only count on 17 representatives.

For the last 8 months, the Assembly was trying to meet at campuses
around the city only to be blockaded by demonstrations from the
Federation of Students (FUBA) led by Trotskyist (MST, PO) and stalinist
organizations (the Maoist PCR).

Twenty wounded, 7 arrested, mostly from the MST (not the mumerous, but the most clumsy) was the result. A kirchnerist was electerd with only 170
Assembly members present out of 236 and outside campus.

Students were demanding "democratization" of the university government
(representation for workers and increase in student representation) and the
end of privatization schemes, etc
