Bolivia Asks US to Extradite Former President

Havana, Feb 15 (AIN) Bolivian President Evo Morales has asked the United
States to extradite former President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada so he can
be tried for a massacre of protestors that left dozens dead in that
Andean country back in February 2003.

According to Granma newspaper, Morales also requested that the
magistrates of Bolivia's Constitutional Court speed up their ruling on a
resolution of the previous Congress that had shelved a bill by his party
the Movement to Socialism (MAS) in the case against Sanchez de Lozada.

The Bolivian president's request came shortly after he attended a mass
in the La Paz Metropolitan Cathedral accompanying family members of the
34 victims of the tragic events three years earlier. Vice President
Alvaro Garcia, Defense Minister Walker San Miguel and other officials
were also present, reported the Bolivian Information Agency.

In October 2003, Sanchez de Lozada fled to the United States after
another act of violent repression brought an end to his presidency.

Democratic governments have nothing to hide and ?neither do they protect
criminals, said Morales, who repeated a call to his counterpart George
W. Bush to join him in an act of justice for the Bolivian people.
