The clincher to me is that the SLA simply had no lineages connected to
anything on the Left.  

while i've thought for as long as i can remember that sla was
government 'project', its *origins* were not necessarily so, seeds
of sla were in bay area prison activism, i knew future sla-er russell 
little a bit through students for farm workers at university of
florida, little hooked up with bruce franklin when he went to
california, franklin had been part of bay area 'revolutionary union'
(along with avakian), he had organized 'venceremos project' - no
connection to venceremos brigades to cuba back then - for
purpose of going into prisons to do political work (not too effectively,
if memory serves), in any event, what later became sla (following 
one-time police informant donald defreeze's rather mysterious escape 
from - i think - vacaville prison) emerged at that time...   michael hoover
