Hi Jd,

there was an article some time ago by Perry Anderson on Israel and how important to its formation was the socialism -kibbutz thing.  I didn't get to read it all but I might have time to look it up.  

Of course in reality the founding of Israel was an act of thuggery. It was only possible because of the Britain's crushing of Palestinian resistance in the 30s.

However it would be wrong to discount the ideology that the founding of Israel represented progress for humanity. Of course when Israel intervened along side Britain and Fracne in the Suez War of 1956, then the left gloss started to fade.  However when I was a young man in the early 60s, at our university the progressive radical students still went to work on the kibbutzim. Their talk was all of the utopian nature of Israel.

That is all gone now - drowned in the blood of countless Arabs.
