"In 1959, Hollywood released "On the Beach," a film about WWIII based on
Neville Shute's best-seller. It was a memorable film that detailed the last
days on earth of a group of survivors who are driven to the Arctic Circle
to escape the radiation that has engulfed the planet.

In fact, most of the action in On the Beach takes place in Australia - the
story involves a lot of regular middle class folks just waiting for the
atomic cloud to arrive to the land down under. The plot involves the
captain and crew of a US submarine who are taking refuge in Australia but
eventually return to the States to die while the people in Australia
(Anthony Perkins, Ava Gardner and others in the movie) swallow poison .
Great last scene of a crew member from the sub fishing in San Francisco
Bay -- of course there are no fish.

Shute used Elliot's lines from the Wastelland:

This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends,
not with a bang, but a whimper.
