I don't think Lou is saying anything controversial. Marx wrote, in "A
Contribution to the Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right":

"The weapon of criticism cannot, of course, replace criticism by weapons,
material force must be overthrown by material force, but theory also
becomes a material force as soon as it has gripped the masses."

Simple example: if the idea that Australia is being "swamped by Asians"
grips large numbers of people, that's as material  a contribution to
Pauline Hanson's electoral fortunes as any financial contribution from
mining companies. 

Another: the de-legitimisation of the East German regime did more to bring
down the Berlin wall than a dozen bulldozers.
