"The premiss of historical materialism is that the production and
reproduction of the material requirements of life is the condition for
human history. Thus the study of history must always begin here."

Lets reword it yet again: "The premiss of historical materialism is that
the production and reproduction of the material requirements of life is
the NECESSARY condition for human history."

Yet this is true of the history of every organism and it therefore not
particularly useful for the analysis of history.

The bases for the study of history - from a historical materialist
standpoint - are the concrete conditions under which and the relations
within which material production occurs.
