If black and white servants were generally treated differently, there would
have been no need for the colonial authorities to promulgate legislation
mandating that they be treated differently.

There's a large body of literature on this question, which has been
extensively debated since the emergence of the civil rights movement...which
placed a rethinking of race on the agenda.  Nothing's really been added to
the material that's been there for a generation.

Overall, academe might get a passing grade on this...but only due to gross
grade inflation and a hangover excuse.....
