I don't believe it. As bitter a pill as Vietnam was for the u.s., it was
nothing in comparison to losing control of the middle east! The U.S. may
cease offensive operations, but the bases it is building are permanent
bases, and it will leave troops to hold them (and to carry out
"defensive" patrols).

It is a review of Christopher Lane, _The Peace of Illusions: American
Grand Strategy from 1940 to the Present_. If the u.s. does what Marvin
predicts, that would be an unimaginably fundamental shift in u.s. policy
as followed from FDR to Bush 2.
