ortega received 40% of the vote, he received about 40% of the vote in
his previous three losing presidential attempts, he clearly benefitted
from right-wing split, conservatives did not expect that he would
reach electoral minimums (either 35% of vote with 5% margin over
second place candidate or 40% with no victory margin required), turns
out he accomplished both, result that fsln-in-the-assembly intended
when it was successful in changing electoral rules, he would not have
won a run-off...

can't be a coincidence that above article opens with reference to
ortega and then moves to focus on chavez...   michael hoover
