Actually, these associations ran way back beyond the CP.  One of the
mythologies of the Left is that the CP was a great advance over its
predecessors (which, in turn, were big leaps beyond their predecessors).
However, there has always been this kind of cross fertilization of radical
currents in which Marxism and allegedly class-based radicalism has always
been an essential component.

The role of secularists, socialists and labor radicals in the antislavery
movement is an important case in point.  They were written out of the
picture in the after-the-fact attempt to make the movement seem more
respectable and less threatening to property rights (beyond property in
people).  Regrettably later radicals also took up this interpretation in an
attempt to make themselves appear as a greater advance over the earlier
movements than they actually were.
