Although one has to worry about translation issues, I'd say that Ahmadinejad
doesn't claim that bankers are Zionists, he says that Zionists "have imposed
themselves on a substantial portion of the banking, financial, cultural and
media sectors?" And the preceding paragraphs make clear that "Zionists" in
this context is a synonym for "Israelis" (as in "the Zionist regime"), not
even really all Zionists, much less Jews per se. And the claim that the
American ruling class (banking, financial, cultural, and media) is
completely dominated by a pro-Israeli (i.e., pro-Zionist) outlook and
practice is hardly disputable.

This is no minor distinction. Robin Wright, writing in this morning's
Washington Post
(http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/29/AR2006112901085.html),
for example, says "The five-page letter, which was both conciliatory in
references to "Noble Americans" and scathing in lambasting Jewish influence
in the United States,..." But the word "Jewish" or "Jew" does not even
appear in Ahmadinejad's letter; he very clearly refers to Zionist influence,
not Jewish influence. Which, for those of us who spend our political lives
pointing out that being anti-Israel is not the same as being anti-Semitic,
is rather an important difference.

Coughlin, by contrast, railed against "Jewish" bankers and was a raving
anti-Semite through and through.

Let's be careful with our comparisons.
