Interestingly enough, Venezuela is now going to help complete a Cuba-to-Venezuela
fibre-optic line. It'll take two years to complete. Currently Cuba has one of the lowest
individual use rates of the Internet, a point the US gov't likes to point out as indication
of Cuba's repressive nature. Of course it would of been a lot easier to run a fibre line to
Key West than 10 times that distance to Venezuela.

Cuba currently uses a satellite link to the internet which slows down the speed and constricts the
bandwidth of the entire island to molasses. I believe Walter L. has commented on this
several times from his own experiences there. This means that only institutions: labs, gov't
offices, schools have priority and few individuals get access to the world of the WWW.

When the line is complete there may be an internet renaissance in Cuba. Going to Linux will
help in developing savvy computer skills by Cuba's youth.
