[Marxism] atheism and the left

A couple of things to add to Paul's and Tom's emails, and also to the
related discussion under 'Islamist, Socialist revolutions do not mix'.

George Soros puts it quite well when he says that 'religious fundamentalism
provides both an antidote to and a cover for the amorality of the market'
(in his book The Bubble of American Supremacy, which is otherwise not very
interesting).

But George Lakoff in Whose Freedom? (2006) says that 'only 12.7 percent of
Americans claim to be evangelical Protestants - and many evangelicals, like
Jimmy Carter, are progressives. Most Christians are progressives'. He
believes that most Christians in the US read the Bible 'as providing
important and useful stories and parables for understanding and guiding
one's life - metaphorical stories that represent a moral but not necessarily
a literal truth, stories that offer spiritual and moral insight but not a
true account of all reality'.
