I did not know that quotation by Mao, but it is adamantly prescient.

Any people that has succesfully taken hold of its own conditions of
reproduction and sets itself into a capitalist path of development is
bound by the nature of capitalism to become an imperialist nation, and
as time goes by and capitalism as a whole sinks itself into its ever
increasingly deepening crisis, it has to do it even faster than
others.

A capitalist China, yesterday, meant a semicolonial China or even a
"non-China" in the same way that a capitalist Latin America means a
"non-Latin-America".

A capitalist China, today, means an imperialist Leviathan that may
become not "a major enemy" but perhaps "the greatest enemy ever seen"
by the world's peoples.

And this is one of the reasons why I am so careful when I broach the
"Is China still socialist?" issue. Something is clear for me: the day
China becomes a full-bearded capitalist and bourgeois formation we
shall know by other means than global trade. Let us honestly hope,
with Comrade Mao, that this never takes place.
