a corollary, if you will...

people do not get upset when i make a stink about an infraction of the 
rule because the amount of quoted text is minor, but because they do not 
like the rule.

proof: the act of clipping is the same effort whether the amount of 
quoted text is large or small, since in the vast majority of cases it's 
one swipe of the mouse to delete all the quoted text. therefore the 
amount of quoted text is not in proportion to the magnitude of the 
infraction. the infraction, large or small, simply represents the 
unwillingness to tidy up a post, perhaps on principle, who knows.
